My inspiration

The saying “Necessity is the mother of invention” was really what started me on this path around 15 years ago but it was really the rubbish kitset furniture available in the retail stores that created the “necessity”.

To explain, I had at this time, a two-story home with an impossible “hairpin” staircase that even to get a flexible mattress up to the bedroom was a significant feat so a normal bed was never going to happen. The only option was to buy a kitset bed but as we all know “kitset anything” lasts about a month before it starts to creak and loosen and a year later you are throwing it out in frustration and there was no way I was going to pay $1000 for this dubious honour not to mention the lack of imagination. So I set out to design and build a bed in my garage, you can see progress photo of this construction. The first thing I wanted was a product that would stand the test of time and able to repeatedly be broken down and reconstructed without the structure being weakened and compromised.

This was achieved by using the nature of stainless steel so as it tightens together, it “locks in” and does not loosen. I have owned this bed not for over 15 years and it has been broken down and moved many times over the years and it is as strong and firm as the day I made it. A testimonial to the sturdiness of the bed and the products I make.

The second thing I wanted to achieve is the personal touch and breaking cool clinical look of stainless steel. So, in this case, I use Rimu head and foot boards, adding candle holders. It was through the encouragement of my friends that lead me to design more products for myself and thinking about this business plan.

What SSI Ltd offers you;

We offer robust permanent products – these are not disposable these are inheritable for creating memories for families and friends. Your grandchildren can sit around the same fire and enjoy what you are enjoying and cook meals for their families on the same fire you are cooking meals on for them.

Yes, you can buy a brazier for $80 from the “cheap products” store that we find in every town but you will buy one again next year after it has rusted away or you can buy one from me and have look the same in 30 years. It is more expensive initially but quickly almost a free item and one you can be proud of and include in your long term landscaping design.

The pleasure I get from being able to offer my children something I know they can give to their children is priceless – to me at least. Even if I never get to meet my grandchildren they will know their granddad sits beside them around that fire.
